Extending the number of rows returned per page in RS

Is there a way to extend the number of rows that will be returned so that Reporting services doesn't display such a large number of pages for the users to page through? It would be easier for them to "wheel mouse" through a long page on the screen.

Anyone out there have any thoughts on how this might be accomplished?

Thanks!

Travis

Here are a couple of options:

- set PageBreakAtEnd and PageBreakAtStart to false on your tables/matrices/grouping panels

- make your row heights smaller, use a smaller font

- filter your data better, or group it into smaller groups and have each group rendered into its own table, turn off paging on those tables

But turning off paging looks okay when viewing the report in the browser, but can make the report look like *** when exported to PDF.

Extending the CSV Export to add Text Padding etc.

Hi All,
I am looking at using are report to generate an export file that is similar
to the CSV export...
I need to be able to the text length of the columns and remove the ","
between columns eg:
CSV
Angus,Logan,Data#3
REQUIRED EXPORT
Angus Logan Data#3
text+pad to 10 (add 5 spaces) text+pad to 10 (add 5 spaces) text+pad to 10
(add 4 spaces)
I am thinking about programatically downloading the CSV (or Xml) and parsing
them into the right format but thought there may be an easier solution...
Any Ideas?
Regards
Angus Logan
MCDBA / MCADYou can use the PadRight() method to add the spaces and then use the CSV
renderering extension and set the deviceInfo named FieldDelimiter to
emptystring. You will have to use URL Access or the SOAP API.

extending SSIS Container?

Has anyone investigated extending any of the SSIS Container classes?

I have been looking into it because we'd like to add a set of standard logging calls on events, standard startup procedures, etc. on any package that we execute.

I've been looking into the Sequence Container, For-Each, etc. They are all sealed classes. I'm not sure why MS has sealed them.

We're currently thinking of implementing our own version of the Sequence Container -- we'd really like to be able to extend the functionality of a standard container class, but we don't want to have to implement the actual container class itself.

Any insight appreciated.

Nope, it is not possible to extend these classes.

The managed classes in Dts.Runtime namespace allow you to manipulate the built-in containers in a package. They are sealed because they are not actually used at execution time, so subclassing them would not be useful.|||

Thanks Michael.

I'm not sure I understand how the containers are not used at execution time -- something like a For-Each loop container would be, wouldn't it?

I think what I'd really like to do is extend the SSIS Package class instead. But that is sealed as well. Perhaps we'll wind up using something like a decorator for the Package class.

|||When package schedules the tasks, SSIS uses its internal representation for For-Each container, but not the actual .NET class. I.e. even if you could subclass the container and override Execute() method, SSIS would not call your method.

We've received similar feedback several times. For now, you can use Execute Package task to achieve some of the functionality, but we know it does not provide all the functionality that might be needed.|||

Extending SQL Server Management Studio

I am wondering if it is possible to extend the Sql Server Management Studio

Extending SQL Server 2005 Mgmt Studio?

Hi,

I've had requests for a version of my product ViEmu, a VS.NET 2003-VS2005 add-in, which will work within SQL Server 2005 Management Studio. I had a look at the Mgmt Studio, and it seems to be a version of the VS2005 environment customized for the product. There is a registry hive along the line of the one in Visual Studio, but located in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Shell.

I looked for any hint online, but it seems largely undocumented.

I tried plugging my software by writing the right 'Packages' and 'AutoloadPackages' keys, and running "SqlWb /setup", which seems to do something. Nothing happened afterwards, anyway, the DLL doesn't seem to be loaded into the process. I tried using the '/log' option, but an error message comes up (which doesn't describe the /setup option either).

Is there a way to load a VS package into SQL Server 2005 Mgmt Studio? Is this a problem with the PLK? Is it unsupported? Has anybody been successful in such a feat? Would it be ok if I hack some way, no matter how obscure? Is this deliberately turned off, as in the Express editions?

Best regards and thanks in advance,

extending RS for Connection String only

I know there have been many questions regarding extending RS to report off of
different data sources (xml, ado etc) - we are successfully running our
reports off of SQL Server stored procedures and are using the web services
(not url) to render directly to PDF from a custom asp .net UI. We would like
to leave this as is, tying the RS Datasource to a SQL Server stored procedure
and leaving it at that. Is it possible to use only the connection interfaces
(IDbConnection) in conjunction with the web services to programmatically
switch between datasources? Or do you have to implement the whole nine yards
(IDbCommand, Parameter, Transaction, Reader etc.) and run reports off of a
custom dataset in order to switch the connection string?
Thanks,ok, I realize maybe that was a stupid question. Here is another one. If we
need to create a custom data extension in order to manipulate the connection
string, is it possible to create a 'custom' data extension that executes SQL
Stored Procedures using the .net SqlCommand for its 'custom data', seeing as
how we have the reports up and running using the stored procedures?
I am trying desperately to figure out the best approach to take. We need to
be able to switch to one of 60 + databases depending on the user requesting
the report. The custom code is in place, the reports done and working - what
would anyone suggest would be the best way to accomplish the last piece of
this puzzle?

extend RS, for example, create my custom controls for use in reports.

Extending ReportingServicesFileShareDeliveryProvider

Hello all,
I need to somehow extend the functionality of the
ReportingServicesFileShareDeliveryProvider so I can ship html formatted
reports along with their chart images to a file share. I've deployed some
reports using the mhtml file format, but alot of our users have problems
viewing reports in this format and our IT dept cannot figure out why...some
computers cannot view the reports unless windows system font is set to small.
Others cannot see the reports at all...and yet other have no problems.
The best thing will be to have the html format and the chart images
exported. The Printer Delivery example does not help 100% because of two
areas:
1) I'm wanting to extend an existing extension if possible...as opposed to
what the Printer Delivery example does...creating an extension from scratch
2) I want to stream the chart images out to the file share as well
Any assistence with this would be awesome. I'll hobble along in the
meantime...
-thanks, brian parkerHi Brian:
I don't see the extensions being too extensible themselves. The
parameters and delivery mechanisms are usually so disparate that it
wouldn't make any sense to inherit from an existing delivery class.
I have another sample that might be useful to you (although I haven't
taken care of delivering images, I plan to try this in the future).

extending report server to support printing

Hi all
I am following the 'Deploying the Printer Delivery Sample' in order to add
printing functionality to reports.
After compiled code was put in both the reports server's and manager's bin
directories( and thier config files were
set accordingly), I can see the new printing delivery extension listed by
the server side (using the report server web service method
.ListExtensions(ExtensionTypeEnum.Delivery);).
But.. no sign for that extension when i open reports in the html viewer nor
in the subscriptions deliveries options..
I am not sure exactly where should i expect to see it if at all.. should i
create a button which will call the printing extension on click event'
I know that in the reports manager it should be listed in the subscription
deliveries options.
Another thing is that i am not sure i have added the codegroup section in
the *policy.config files correctly.
In the reports manager config file i had to remove it because it generated a
'no object reference' error..
I guess this should interfier at some point.
Thanks alot for your attention

Extending RDL & rendering

How can I add new elements to an RDL report definition and then render those
elements? For example, I'd like to add a new type of report (i.e. not a
table, matrix, list, or chart), and write the code to generate the rendering
of that particular type of element.
A further complication: the implementation of this new element would also
need to do the database queries, since it does not fit into the Reporting
Services model (i.e. getting a flattened dataset back)
Is this possible within Reporting Services? You can extend with a new renderer but you have to render the whole thing
yourself, which is not what you want. There is no way that I know of to
extend by adding new elements. You can definitely create a data processing
extension, that is not a problem.

Extending native components

Can anyone provide any direction in extending existing SSIS components with a custom component, if it's possible at all. In some cases there are just slight bits of functionality missing that I think I could add in myself. But, I'm not much of a programmer and need a bit of help in the declaration of the component in my own custom component.

Thanks.I don't beleive this is possible. Whilst I am looking at the managed interfaces, not native code, they are all documented as sealed or not inheritable.

SQLCompare + 3rd party backup would be at the top of my list.
Personally I'd like to be able to offer Reporting Services Scripter
(http://www.sqldbatips.com/showarticle.asp?ID=62) as an add-in to enhance
the RS scripting abilities of SSMS (possibly in the form of a wizard)

extending function: view dependencies

So I have a number of separate databases on my SQL 2005 Server.

I also have a number of Reports in SSRS.

Many of the stored procedures in the various databases reference tables, functions, and stored procedures in other databases on the same server.

How can I accomplish the effect of right clicking on a stored procedure for instance, clicking view dependencies, and having everything show up in that list, not just the items in that DB?

It is all stored in the database in one form or another, but I must be missing some crucial piece to integrating it all together.

Note: I did not design this system, just maintaining and modifying existing items. There are no schemas to speak of. SSRS will most likely move to a dedicated server at one point with other data warehousing functions, so the ability to span servers would be useful.

Thanks!

Matt

Mhmm, I think this is not possible unless you parse the procedue on your own. There are no entries for dependencies in the system tables created for non-db-local objects. Additionally you can′t use schemabinding for maintainance as schemabinding applies only to two part names.

|||Are there any third party tools that would combine all this information into an enterprise version of "view dependencies"?

thanks|||

Hi,

Jens is correct. There is a lot of confusion about "sysdepends", so we've added a new section explaining SQL dependencies in a web refresh section of the BOL. Please read:

which I have never used.

Extending Delievery Extensions in SQL Reporting Services

Hi All

We have requirement in Reports. When ever report is sent to file share using Reporting Services File Share extension than details of that file should be saved in database.

How can we achieve this functionality? What is the best possible way of achieving this?

Please let me know the solution.

Thanks in advance

Rehan Mustafa Khan
HCL Technologies
Noida,IndiaYou can to implement a windows service application.
This application will use the FileSystemWatcher class
present in the .NET Framework.

The application can be written to keep watch over the
directory into which the Reports will be saved. As soon
as a notification is received by the application it will query
the file attributes and save these attributes into the database
by using ADO.NET

Extending CDOSYS Mail to include Query Attachments?

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has extended the standard CDOSYS Mail Stored Procedure (SP) to allow it to send the results of a query as an attachment?

I have set up a SP for CDOSYS Mail as outlined in the following link:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?id=kb;de;312839&sd=tech

Currently I am using the old SQL Mail (xp_SendMail). But due to the problems with losing the MAPI connection and other limitations, I have been forced to find another solution. Using SQL Mail, I was able to add a query parameter and attach the results of the query to the email. I need to have the same functionality in CDOSYS Mail

Thanks,

Jasper has written an sp for it check it out here:
http://www.sqlteam.com/Forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=20649|||Sorry, I don't think I explained myself very well!

I currently use xp_sendmail and pass a query as a parameter and attach the results of this query to an email. I would like to know if anyone has extended CDOSYS Mail to have the same functionality? Example of how I use this is in xp_sendmail @.query parameter would be a query which returns the total number of records on an import table and xp_sendmail sends the results in an email attachement OR sends the results as part of the body of the email.

Extract of the xp_sendmail Syntax:
xp_sendmail {[@.recipients =] 'recipients [;...n]'}
[,[@.query =] 'query']

[,[@.attach_results =] 'attach_value']|||I had the same problem and found a workaround using osql to write the results of the query to a file. I then include the file as an attachment and delete it from the server. Seems to work well even within a loop.

I used this to work from.
http://www.sqlteam.com/item.asp?ItemID=4722

And came up with this command line that seems to create a file with the same format as the attach query results did with sendMail:

SET @.bcpCommand = "osql -h-1 -w800 /U usrId /P pw /d " + @.dbName + " /Q ""myprocname parm1, parm2"" -o "
SET @.bcpCommand = @.bcpCommand + @.FileName

EXEC master..xp_cmdshell @.bcpCommand

Then just pass @.fileName as the attachment to the cdosys mail procedure. I then use xp_cmdshell to delete the file from the server.

Extending BI studio

Hi,
I need to add a custom menu option say under the Tools menu in the BI studio for SSIS projects. Is it possible to extend BU studio using Visual studio addins, or Visual Studio SDK (VSIP).

The Visual studio addin works fine; however I want my custom menu option to show up only when I have a SSIS project open so that I can perfom my custom step whenever the user selects the menu option

Thanks,
-SuriYou can extend BIDS with standard Visual Studio 2005 add-ins, because it is Visual Studio 2005. If you look at the Help menu, About, you will see it is the full VS IDE. The "Installed Products" list just shows different items depending on if you have installed through SQL Server tools only, VS only, or both SQL & VS together.|||Hi Darren,
The real problem I am facing is that the Visual Studio 2005 addin wizard allows you to specify the contextGUIDS which are defined in the vsContextGuids class. This class has guids defined only for Visual Basic, C# and J# type projects. I am not sure how I can specify a SSIS project using the vsContextGuids class.

-Suri|||Sorry, haven't got that far myself yet, but I look forward to someone else answering as I'm sure I'll need to know.

Just out of interest what does your SSIS specific add-in do?|||In the custom action, I need to load the package, parse it for some specific information, and write that information to a xml file (basically filtered package information) which can be then read and processed by another app we have.

Thanks|||

I'm not positive if this is what you're after, but I have an SSIS deployment add-in that we use to allow developers to deploy packages to a server. We use the following code to determine what packages are in the current solution, it may help? This sample builds nodes on a treeview for each project/package found in the current solution.

Private Const ssisProjectKind As String = "{d183a3d8-5fd8-494b-b014-37f57b35e655}"

If _applicationObject.Solution.Count = 0 Then
Return "Not valid without an open solution"
End If

Dim prjCount As Integer = 0
Dim pkgCount As Integer = 0

For Each proj As Project In _applicationObject.Solution.Projects
If Not proj.Kind = ssisProjectKind Then
Continue For
End If
prjCount += 1
Dim prjNode As TreeNode = Me.tvPackages.Nodes.Add(proj.Name)
For Each pi As ProjectItem In proj.ProjectItems
If pi.Name.EndsWith(".dtsx") Then
Dim pkgNode As TreeNode = prjNode.Nodes.Add(pi.Name)
pkgNode.Tag = pi.FileNames(0)
pkgCount += 1
End If
Next
Next

If prjCount = 0 Then
Return "No SSIS Projects were found in this solution"
End If

If pkgCount = 0 Then
Return "No SSIS Packages were found in this solution"
End If
