External access to SQL Server

Hello,

I'm not sure whether this is right section to post this. It seems the most relevant one to me. (Please point me in the right direction if it is not).

I am a programmer/web developer for a medium sized organisation in the financial industry (in Australia). Obviously being in the finance industry, we have very strict guidelines and access when it comes to security. We are currently in the process of converting our website to use a SQL Server database (instead of MS Access which we have been using for years). In the past, we have accessed our web database via SFTP as it was only an Access file. Now that we are converting to SQL Server, we will still need access to our database (which is on a server hosted externally). It seems a bit silly (and even bizarre) to me to consider trying to access a SQL Server database via SFTP (as that, to me, defeats the purpose of some of its security features), but is it even possible?

My security guys here will only allow me to access the external server that hosts our website/database via SFTP (on a machine that is outside our network, so any files that I wish to update on our website I need to copy over via USB or whatever). If I am not able to get into the SQL Server administrator program to change our database via SFTP, is there someway that I can "drop" a changed copy of our database into a directory somewhere that SQL Server can "pick up"?

Am I making sense?

Many thanks,

Bronwyn

You could drop that, but you would anyway have to do some administrative stuff, like detaching the old database, are even just stopping the service. Perhaps it is better to install a web admin client for the SQL Server which is downloadable at Microsoft. It does not provide the whole functionality of the Managment Studio or Enterprise Manager, but this would be a proper way to execute your changing scripts to narrow the maintaince window.

host the client application inside your site

or design a webservice inside your site

and have the remote application

access Sql server through webservice

Extending native components

Can anyone provide any direction in extending existing SSIS components with a custom component, if it's possible at all. In some cases there are just slight bits of functionality missing that I think I could add in myself. But, I'm not much of a programmer and need a bit of help in the declaration of the component in my own custom component.

Thanks.I don't beleive this is possible. Whilst I am looking at the managed interfaces, not native code, they are all documented as sealed or not inheritable.

Expression on hidden property

I have param named Direction i would like to put

on the hidden property of image this expression

iif(Parameters!Direction.Value = "ascending" ,False ,True)

But i've got error message

.....my expression is not avalid value.

why?

Hi, didn't you miss the "=" as in :

=iif(Parameters!Direction.Value = "ascending" ,False ,True)

|||

Maybe?

Can you please write me the correct form you think it should be?

|||

It′s like a said before...

=iif(Parameters!Direction.Value = "ascending" ,False ,True)

if everything's ok that should hide your image when the Parameters!Direction.Value is "ascending" and show it otherwise.

|||Thanks, work grate :)

expression for count on a field

Can anybody point me in the right direction please?

I am printing labels. And have got this problem.

The total quantity for example is 250 all with different labels fields.

What I need is:

1 of 250

2 of 250

Example of label field: IAC-000245

This is my expression:

=CountDistinct(Fields!ASSETNO.Value)

But the result is is giving me 250 for all labels it should be 1 or 2 or 3

The end result will be:

=CountDistinct(Fields!ASSETNO.Value) & " to " & Fields!QUANTITY.Value

Kindest Regards

This may work for you...

=RunningValue(1,Sum,Nothing)

To append a string, you may need to convert the Running Value to a string.

cheers,
Andrew|||

Thank you it worked like a dream

exporting to dbf

Hi,
I am not sure if this problem has been discussed already, if it has could someone please point me in the right direction. The problem I am having is exporting a sql server table to a dbf file. I am having a problem with one field in particular. The fie
ld is defined at a numeric with precision 20 and scale 6. When I export this to a dbf file it cuts of the 6th digit after the decimal. I have tried changing the field type within the transform settings, I have tried changing the type within the table
to such things as float and decimal, but nothing seems to work. I also need this in a dbf format to join up to a GIS shapefile. Does any one have any suggestions of how to get around this?

Create a view that converts the numeric value to a character string. Export
through the view.
