Exterprise manager

On my SQL 2000 server I can no longer view the server properties with
Enterprise manager.
The properties page just flashes up and disappears.
No errors in the Event logs.
Does anyone have any suggestions about how I might overcome the problem.
Regards Craig.I remember seeing this a while ago. What SQL Server service pack is
installed on this client? Could you upgrade it so that it matches the SP
version of server?

This issue maybe caused by the MSSQLServer service startup accout lacking
of permission to access some registry keys. You may try to add the startup
account to local admin group, and then stop and restart the service to see
if it works.

Exterpise Manager Select Export (ASCII,Excel,Access)?

Hi All. A client needs to send me some sample data. He has insisted he can query the table in Enterprise Manager via a simple select... "Select * from Table1"...

Now I need to get the data in some simple form (ASCII, Excel, Access, etc.) sent to me.

Can someone please provide me the info so I can pass it on for him to query a table from Enterprise Manager and "export it" to a simple file so I can receive it.

ANY THOUGHTS would be helpfull and GREATLY Appreciated!

Thanks.

BillIf this is a one timer I would go for "Tools -> Data Transformation Services -> Export Data".

// Pati|||Hey Pati... It may just be a one timer... but if the data looks good, it may be more frequent. it turns out some other process is taking records from this table, and may be removing them... Part of the reason we are trying to get some snapshots of the data.

I'm trying not to write an app until I know if we need this data.

Is it really simple to use to do the menu picks? Doesn't seem like the end user is very experienced, nor am I on Sql Server.

Thanks for the thoughts.

Bill|||If you think that you will need the same procedure again then you can save the DTS package for further use and then schedule it to run as desired.
...or then for another approach you could automate everything with scripts/scheduled jobs.

But as you're saying that you don't have much experience in SQL Server and that this might just be a one off solution then I would stick to DTS.

External image not displayed in report manager

Hello,
I have a problem and I don't know how to solve it. I hope you guy's
know.
I have a report with a external image which refers to a image on a
SharePoint intranet site. When I preview the report in visual studio
the image is visible. But when I deploy the report to the report server
the image is not displayed and a red cross is showing. I have already
set the execution account on the report server but still not working.
When I enter the URL of the image in the browser on the report server
the image is visible. I don't understand what I do wrong? Hope someone
knows!
I use reporting service 2005
Regards,
Robbert Visscher
HollandI had this problem once. I had to enable anonymous access to the
virtual directory for the images folder.
Not sure if that is what your problem is, but maybe...

Thanks for your answer! I have set the credentials in the report

source), I received a warning stating that images would not display
correctly unless an unattended execution account or anonymous access
was configured. Because this was an "OR", I am assuming that you only
need 1 or the other.
My thought was to enable anonymous access, try your report, and disable
anonymous again, just to see if that solves the problem.
Sorry I can't be of more help.

Extending Management Studio

In SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Manager was rewritten and renamed to Management Studio. If ISVs (independent software vendors) could plug their SQL Server tool(s) into Management Studio – creating a single environment for you to work in – which tools do you use that you’d like to see surfaced in Management Studio.

It would be extremely nice to be able to compile, check in, and check out changes on the fly from within SQLMS.

Also, IntelliSense would be very nice. Apex SQL Edit has their own, however I like the VS / SQLMS interface better.|||Thanks for the feedback. IntelliSense is soemthing we're looking into. A different group owns this so I don't know the latest for it. Its addition would improve greatly productivity.

Dan|||RedGates SQL Compare and Data Compare tools would be very helpful for those of us that manage seperate Dev, UAT and Production enviroments.

Allison|||Could we get the Query Analyzer from SS 2000?
Please.|||Sessionless analysis of current operations available in Quest's Spotlight. It was explained to me as directly analysing the memory (whitesapaces) being used by SQL Server.|||G'day Dan.

Are you asking which elements of the Management Studio we would like to see exposed to extensibility? If so, I have a list! ;-) I am an ISV start-up with a potentially "killer app" (aren't they all lol) and the lack of extensibility is crippling...
Cheers,

Xavier Ltd|||Hi Paul,

That's a slightly different question than what I'm asking, however, it is very relevant. Let's chat as I'd love to get your list - you can reach me at dan.jones@.microsoft.com.

Cheers,
Dan|||I think it would be cool to have PromptSQL integrated into Management Studio to give SQL Intellisense inside Management Studio :-)

But then I would say that.|||With respect to QA 2000, what is lacking in SSMS 2005 that you would want added?

SQLCompare + 3rd party backup would be at the top of my list.
Personally I'd like to be able to offer Reporting Services Scripter
(http://www.sqldbatips.com/showarticle.asp?ID=62) as an add-in to enhance
the RS scripting abilities of SSMS (possibly in the form of a wizard)

Extended Stored Procedure

Dear Mike
I've created this sp through Enterprise Manager. and when I execute
sp_addextendedProc it show me Error message:
Server: Msg 2714, Level 16, State 7, Procedure sp_addextendedproc, Line 26
There is already an object named 'xp_Session' in the database. Why would you execute sp_addextendedproc if you've already added it? You
only need to add the xp once.

extended connection managers for data flow destinations?

It looks like you can only extended connection managers for data flow sources.

Is there anyway to develop a custom connection manager for the SQL destination in the data flow destinations?

I can’t use hardcoded connection strings.I can’t use configurations because they are not encrypted.I already have managed code that will give the corrected connection string.I already have a custom connection manager that I use from the data flow sources.I just need one for data flow destinations but I can’t see a way to extend into the OLE DB?

The OLEDB Destination is just like the OLEDB source and can use the same connection managers. However, you are using the SQL destination and that is a special destination and needs the specific connection manager that it supports. If you want to use your custom connection manager then switch to using the OLEDB destination instead and it should just work.

HTH,

Matt

|||

oledb destinations only support the special destinations as well. there is no way I can see to use a custom connection manger in any of the destinations.

except for the script component and in that you can do whatever you want.

|||

Actually they support anything they see as an OLEDB connection. I can create different types of OLEDB connections and the OLEDB destination will support them (e.g. excel, sql (sqlncli), sql (sqloledb), etc). It does indeed have to be an OLEDB type connection though.

Matt

|||

ok so I think you might have answered my question.

If I develop a custom connection mgr derived from connectionmanagerbase I can't use that custom connection mgr with any of the stock data flow destinations.

because only OLEDB connections can be used and there is no way to create a custom OLEDB connection.

so there is no way to do what I wanted to do.

except the script componet can do what I want but I have to override the correct portions....

|||

Well there are ways to create custom OLEDB connections but you would have to write your own OLEDB provider, which not many would want to do so I guess in your case a script would probably be the best alternative.

expression to get CreatedBy, CreationDate, ModifiedBy, and ModifiedDate properties for report?

If you look at the General Properties for a report in Report Manager, there are 4 properties listed at the top:

Modified Date: 2/26/2007 6:37 PM Modified By: DOMAIN\username1 Creation Date: 2/14/2006 5:19 PM Created By: DOMAIN\username2

What I'm looking for is if there's a way to retrieve these properties via an expression from a textbox within a report. For instance, there's already an expression that is:

=Globals!ReportName

I know it won't be that easy for the CreatedBy, CreationDate, ModifiedBy, and ModifiedDate properties, but I thought I'd ask if there was a workaround or hack.

We're wanting to put that info into the footer of all our reports. (Actually this is for Report Builder reports, but you can still use expressions in Report Builder reports, so it should apply as it would to normal reports.)

Hi Greg,

I don't believe any of that information is stored in the RDL itself. The only way I know to get that information is to query the ReportServer database, similar to:

SELECT [ModifiedDate]

,[Modified].[UserName]

,[CreationDate]

,[Created].[UserName]

FROM [ReportServer].[dbo].[Catalog]

INNERJOIN [ReportServer].[dbo].[Users] as [Modified] ON [Catalog].[ModifiedByID] = [Modified].[UserID]

INNERJOIN [ReportServer].[dbo].[Users] as [Created] ON [Catalog].[CreatedByID] = [Created].[UserID]

WHERE [Catalog].Name =Globals!ReportName.Value

Then you can access those fields from the dataset.

Express Manager download for RTM version of SQLServer Express

Has MS updated the Express Manager tool for the RTM version of SQLServer Express? It's a great tool and not having it causes so much pain (I have to use the command line tools!).

Thanks in advance! We're working on an update to the Express Manager. We expect to release a Community Technology Preview of it by the end of the year. In the mean time your options are to use the command line tools, use Visual Studio, or acquire the Developer or Evaluation Editions of SQL Server 2005 and use the full-blown Management Studio.

Dan|||I tried to install the client tools from SQL Server 2005 developer edition but the installer for this (after downloading another 2.8GB!) says components are already installed and cannot be upgraded (or message similar to this).

I'll use the command line tools I guess Smile

Thanks anyways!

Express Manager / Management Studio Express

When will the express manager be available for the msdn version that is scheduled to ship later this month. If express manager isn't going to ship then what tool will allow me to create users in my express 2005 database.I'm wondering that also. I think I heard something about MS dropping Express Manager.|||We've dropped Express Manager. Instead, you can download and use SQL Server Management Studio Express to manage your Express servers. SSMSE is a subest of the full Management Studio tailored for SQL Server Express functionality. SSMSE can also connect to uplevel SQL Server 2005 servers, SQL Server 2000 servers, and MSDE 2000 servers.

You can download it from MSDN here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/ Look for the "Free Management Tool" paragraph on the page. It has a link to the Management Studio Express download page.

A few things to be aware of:

First, Management Studio Express is currently a Community Technology Preview, so there are still a few minor defects that remain to be fixed before it formally ships in the first half of 2006. If you use SSMSE, you can use this MSDN Forum to provide feedback. Issues raised on these forums have added weight with the dev team when it comes to prioritizing changes.

Second, Management Studio Express cannot run side-by-side with SQL Server 2005 Management Studio. SSMSE is supposed to have an error message that pops up telling you to use Management Studio if it detects the full product on your machine, but this appears to be broken for many people, for whom nothing happens at all when the try to start Management Studio Express on machines that have a version of the full Management Studio installed.|||Thanks for the info and the link!|||After reading a number of posts and trying out SSMSE, I would have to say that you have done an excellent job on 2005.

Hi there.

I have just installed the Express editions of VB and SQL.However, I can't seem to find an IDE for SQL Server. I have been able to create a database through VB, but not directly in SQL Express as there is no way into a UI. Is this normal?

I would like to create and manage databases independently of VB and VWD and then connect to them in the way it was probably done before 2005. Is this possible? Do I have to install the SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE)?

Many thanks in advance,

Chris

By the way, very impressed with the whole Express Edition initiative and with the tools themselves. It's a brave move. Well done to all involved. I'm sure these editions will help to ensure .NET dominance over other technologies for years to come.
