Extra White Space

Hi All,
I've got a report that is set up with the Report Properties layout as
follows: page width = 8.5in; page height = 11in; left/right margins = .25in;
top/bottom margins = .50in.
When the report displays in IE7, there is a large white area (blank) to the
right of the report and it's full length. When I export as a PDF document,
this area seems to cause extra pages to be created in the PDF output.
Since I'm not sure "why" this extra white space is appearing, I thought I'd
post this here.
Thanks in advance!
Kind regards - FredHi Fred,
I've found, that meters of extra white space on the right side, before all
when viewed in HTML, are created when there are overlapping visible textboxes.
When textboxes overlap where one is invisible, there are also minor layout
differences, but never so dramatically.
Yours, Henry

Extra space at bottom of page

I keep getting extra space at the bottom of each page on my report when it is deployed to the web server but I don't get this extra space on the report server. Does anyone know if this is in the report layout or if the problem is in the web page itself?

Thanks,

messed around with report printer properties and re-deployed.sql

Extra page in print preview and .pdf

I have tried and tried to get my reports to quit printing an extra blank page but have been unsuccessful in my efforts.

I've set the margins in my report properties to (all in inches):

.75 - top

.5 - left, right, bottom

My page is landscape so the width is 11 and the height is 8.5

I've made sure my table is not wider than 9.5 - I've even made it as small as 8" wide to see if that was the problem . (I've done this for the header/footer as well.)

My report prints all on one page but I still get a 2nd page with header/footer information and a blank body.

I read a post that said to try making the right margin 0 - that didn't work either.

Additional information: I just saw a post suggesting borders around everything to see what might be bleeding onto a 2nd page.

One page 1, the full borders are there, so nothing should be bleeding onto page 2. However, when I go to page 2, there are no borders around the header, but the left edge shows on the right side of the page. Also, the footer is missing it's left edge, but the right shows. I've tried making both the header and footer smaller, as well as moving them further right - still get the exact issue.

I'm using the reporting services for Visual Studio .NET 2003.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Well, turns out it was the layout. Although my report elements were the right size, the layout was too big, forcing the margins over.|||

It is COOL that your posted your results!

Hello - just a general comment!

I have eliminated the capability to export to PDF within RS in that PDF NEVER renders any ledgeable characters in my part of the world which includes:

Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Mayamar (Burma), Vietnam, Pakistan and Tibet and this also includes any dialect in Mandarin!

We just stick to a TIF and everything is always perfect -

When you say your layout was too big, what did you set it too?

Just curious, since I was having an issue similar to yours although I might not have worded it as clearlyWink [;)]

Extra Page in Adobe Export

I also have the same problem. When I export the report out in pdf format,
there is an extra page.
I am running RSR2 and adobe 7.0.2
Is there any solution to this?yes,
Make sure there is no extra space in the report body after a table and chart

Extra Page in Adobe Export

Using SRS SP2 and Adobe 7.0.2
When my report renders in the preview pane it it limited to one page but
when exported to Adobe it prints an extra page. The report has Page
Header/Body/Page Footer sections.
Is this a bug or am I missing something in the config?
ThanksI have the same problem. Would like to know if there is a solution.

Extra Page for a Key or Legend

I would like to know if I can create an extra page in a dynamic report that
will appear as the final page in a report and house the Key Legend and
glossary for the contained report.
I can think of two ways in theory that it can be done one by being able to
manipulate the page break to creak a final page and another to conbine two
seperate reports at runtime.
This is however a theory and I by no means think either of these is possible.
Does anyone have any Ideas at all on this?
Please and thank you.How about putting this information in its own table at the end of what you
currently have and then going into the properties of the table and choose
page break before this table? I've done this before.

Extra empty pages in PDF report

Report looks great in Visual studio and in a Browser, but when I convert it
to pdf for printing, I am getting extra pages after every good page with just
a header printed on those pages.
I tried decrease the size of the report and make sure that it fits into 8
1/2 x 11 inches, but it did not help.
I still have those annoying empty pages in the printed report.
Any other suggestions on how can I fix it?
Thank you.Simon if are you having problem with client side printing then you will want
to try the following.
Try setting body width to 8.46 if you are using letter/portrait. If you are
using letter/landscape then set the width to 10.96.
I hope that helps.
This is an issue Microsorft is now aware of.

anyone know why I'm getting an extra blank page after every page when I
export to PDF?I did notice something weird ... I click on the body of the report and try
to change the width 11(w) x 8.5 (h) (landscape report) and it always changes

to PDF. However, I have checked my body(9.9in) vs report page width
(11in) with .25 inch left and rt margins. I think the problem is
related the way RS computes the vertical requirements of outputting a
report -- I have many conditionally hidden lines in a table group. If
I set the List height (4in) just large enough to contain the table, I
only get one page rendered when in fact two pages should be rendered to
PDF. However, if I increse the List height to (4.1in) I generate a
report of 4 pages for what should be a 2-page report with pages 2 and 4
blank.

I have a crystal report and it is printing an extra blank page at the end. I have the detail ruler coming right up to the end of the text and I have surpressed the report header and footer. external image not rendering when generated from aspx page

I'm having problems displaying images generated by aspx pages from a report. It works fine if I point the external value to a static image on the web. I can paste the url to the page into IE and it generates the image with no issues. What am I doing wrong? I used a textbox to verify that the correct url is being generated (= Parameters!MYPROJECT_URL.Value & Parameters!MYPROJECT_NO.Value).

Are there any issues with generating external images with reporting services?

I have installed SP1 for MS 2005...shouldn't I see some sort of visual confirmation in Management studio when I click the Help Menu->about? saying the version is MS SQL Server 2005? how do I verify that the upgrade was successful?

You can check if the upgrade is successful from the error logs, they contain the build number on the top.

External Image disappears with Interactive Sorting

Hi,

I have an image in the page header that is included in the project and is defined as "external". I also have interactive sorting enabled for the report. External and Internal address of a SQL database. Please HELP!

Ok,

I am a webdesigner who at the moment does not know SQL (although, I plan on remedying that) so I am developing a page with a DB designer - he is doing the DB work, I am doing the look/feel, but he asked me the following questions, of which I cannot seem to find an answer and the guys who tend our server are useless - so I am hoping someone here can help me. In general what he needs to know is:

"what is the external address (either in domain format or IP) and the equivalent internal address so that we can access the msSQL running on your server. The internal address is needed for the webpages to talk to it, while the external address is needed for development of the pages in visual studio and the database tools." Also, he later sent me an email asking that when I get this info (from someone) that it would be usefull to get a sample string/query to get access to the DB. I am running SQL 2000 and have enterprise manager. Where can I find this information? or how do I figure this out?

Thank you for all the help -- Please let me know if you need any more info.

Hey everybody,

I am a webdesigner who currently does not know SQL (although I am working on Remedying that) So as for my question, it comes from the gentleman who I am working with on a new site. What he needs to know is:

"what is the external address (either in domain format or IP) and the equivalent internal address so that we can access the msSQL running on your server. The internal address is needed for the webpages to talk to it, while the external address is needed for development of the pages in visual studio and the database tools."

We are running SQL 2000 with Enterprise manager. On an IIS server. He would also like to get a sample string {? = Query?} for a page accessing the DB.

Any help about where to find this information would be greatly appreciated. If you need to know anything else. Please let me know...

|||http://www.connectionstrings.com/?carrier=sqlserver2005|||There is no internal and external address. I am not quite sure what you mean by that. There is also no querystring in IIS to access the db, you will have to code that for yourself. You can use any coding language and a connectionstring from www.connectionstrings.com. Hars to tell what he wants to know with this information so far.

Jens K. Suessmeyer.

http://www.sqlserver2005.de
|||

The 'internal' address will be the ServerName. The 'external' address will be the port and IP address -that assumes that your firewall allows that port to be open. (I suggest using something other than the default port of 1433 -choose a high number port to use.)

As Jens suggested, the web application should use the correct connectionstring. Hopefully, you will NOT allow something as reckless and dangerous as using a =?Query to pass connection information or sensitive data.

Extents

Q: How could you tell I didn't have any page splits?
And you're correct: it's a composite index with an
identity for the third column. How could you tell that?
Why would an indentity eliminate page splits? Is it
because the data will always get laid out serially if
it's on an identity which isn't the case for us since
it's composite?

Have a look at this page which will help you interpret these results:
http://www.sql-server-performance.co...gmentation.asp
External fragmentation occurs when pages are contiguous within extents.
Ideally, you have one extent switch every 8 pages; the degree to which you
have more than this determines the external fragmentation, but you don't
have any.
I guess it's theoretically possible to set an identity_insert to on and
insert a new identity value into a hole on an existing identity range to
cause a page split, but apart from that case it doesn't happen as the
records are always added at the end ('left' or 'right' depending on the
increment). I'm assuming a clustered index on the identity column BTW.
Interesting point about the composite index though. If your first column in
the index isn't the identity one, then I was just lucky to guess that there
was an indentity column there and the lack of fragmentation is presumably
because the data has been recently reindexed, or the index just added, or
the data has ben miraculously added in a completely sorted order. If it was
the first column out of the three, then I'd expect the corresponding lack of
page-splits as mentioned previously.
Rgds,

Extending the number of rows returned per page in RS

Is there a way to extend the number of rows that will be returned so that Reporting services doesn't display such a large number of pages for the users to page through? It would be easier for them to "wheel mouse" through a long page on the screen.

Anyone out there have any thoughts on how this might be accomplished?

Thanks!

Travis

Here are a couple of options:

- set PageBreakAtEnd and PageBreakAtStart to false on your tables/matrices/grouping panels

- make your row heights smaller, use a smaller font

- filter your data better, or group it into smaller groups and have each group rendered into its own table, turn off paging on those tables

But turning off paging looks okay when viewing the report in the browser, but can make the report look like *** when exported to PDF.

Expression editor (sort of) bug

I've noticed in the expression editor that pasting rich text (like copied
from a web page) preserves the formatting. This makes stuff look really
screwed up in the expression editor. I noticed this copying stuff from this
newsgroup and pasting it into the expression editor.I believe the formatting goes away after you commit it. But be careful
about extra carriage returns/line feeds. They can mess up the code.

Express Edition, Reporting Services, and Licensing

Hello,

From reading the licensing considerations page [1], my understanding is that if my environment is 2 servers - an IIS Server and a separate SQL Server Std - I will need a 2nd license of SQL Server to run Reporting Services on my IIS Server? Is this correct? If so, would a license of SQL Server Express Edition w/Advanced Services satisfy the second license requirement, or would I need a license to match the database server?

Essentially, what is the recommended guidance for Reporting Services and Web Applications? It's a known best practice that, for performance, run SQL Server on a dedicated machine separate from IIS. Is it recommended that the database server also serve the reports?

Thanks,

Hi,

"Is it recommended that the database server also serve the reports?"

there is no no yes or no for this, cause this depends on your workload and the amount of licences you want to spend on.

For the first qestions you ask, the scenario mentioned is not possible as you are only allowed to query and report data from the local SQL Server database.

Jens,

Thanks for your reply. I take it by workload, you are referring to combined/overall workload, not just Reporting Services vs. Transactional/Operational, correct? Obviously, that would needed to be weighed into the decision.

Thanks,|||Exactly.

Just a point from your initial question...

You can not use Express Advanced to bypass the licensing for SQL Standard Edition. Every person or service connecting to Standard Edition must be properly licensed either by CAL or Proc License. Using Reporting Services from Express Advanced doesn't change the licensing requirements for Standard.

Mike,

Thanks for your reply. I'm going to contact licensing just to be safe, but that makes sense.

Thanks,

expoting data from reporting srvcs to PDF

Hi,
I am trying to export a report to pdf and it does not keep all teh
columsn in the same page. I could not find any options to specify. Has
faced the same problem?
JaideepCheck the margins in the Report properties, layout tab. Also the page width
and Page height. FYI for Portrait Page width must be 21cm and Height 29,7cm.
For landscape the opposite.

Exporting to PDF through web service produses blank pages

Hi all,
I am exporting to PDF through web service a report that contains matrix.
I get almost every second page a blank page.
The same report when exported to PDF by the report manager does not contain
blank pages.
Is it a bug, Is there any work around
Thanks,
YuvalNobody is going to answer your question. I've been asking it for days. I
emailed all those Microsoft bloggers. I posted here. Nothing. I did
enough research that I am conviced Microsoft knows about the issue.
Note they claim you can find known bugs here:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/bugs/
But you can only find bugs they want you to find (ie ones they know how to
fix). If you seach for reporting services, you will find 0 known bugs.
The problem is that the List containing the matrix is growing so much that
the report won't fit on one page. So it prints two pages. You can see this
by changing the background colour of the List that contains the matrix.
When you run it, you will find the coloured list extends onto the 'blank'
page.
I haven't seen a fix yet. You can shrink your matrix so that the list won't
grow onto the next page. But that's not usually an acceptable fix, because
it means leaving about a third of the page blank.
Seems to me there's no acceptable way to print a matrix report. This issue
affects the tiff, and I found a different issue in Excel.

but it took a while to find the person who knew the answer.
If you are not using subtotals in your matrix, you might try "KB article
875518 is FIX: Width of the list that contains a matrix grows unexpectedly
when exported to PDF." This hotfix (only available by calling support)
didn't solve my problem.
If you are using subtotals in your matrix (like I was), this is the answer.
This response was from Sarah Parra:
"
The problem is that the list always extends a certain amount to the right
and bottom of the matrix, and the amount that it extends is based directly
on how wide (for column totals) or tall (for row totals) the total textbox
is. If you look at your report in the designer, in the bottom right corner,
under the totals boxes, there is a gray/brown empty space. That space is
effectively how much extra list you will see in the final output. We take
the size of the matrix to be the actual size that you see, minus the totals
boxes. That means that the list effectively looks like it is that much
bigger than the matrix (instead of being the exact same size). When the
rendering happens, it then adds that much padding to the right and below the
actual matrix.
This is a bug as well, it's just a different bug from the one described in
the article/hotfix. :) This one does have a fairly simple workaround. You
need to resize the list to be the size of the matrix, minus the size of the
totals columns/rows. The designer will not allow you to size the list
smaller than the matrix (which includes the totals), but you can do this
manually in the rdl. The following are the instructions I sent to another
customer on a sample report he had provided, so the sizes and line number
will not match up for you:
(1) Find the size of the column total box. You can just click on it and look
at the Width property. It's 0.875in.
(2) In the Solution Explorer, right click the .rdl file and select View
Code. In the code, find the Width definition for the List itself. You'll see
it on line 78, and it looks like this : <Width>5.875in</Width>. Change that
to that value, minus the size of the total column, .875. So just make it
5.0in, or you can make it a little bigger if you want some extra space
displayed to the right of the matrix itself. In the designer at this point,
it will look like the Total box is gone, but it's still there. You can do
the same thing for the row totals if you want. You will probably want to do
this, because if you have a situation where the matrix should end at the
very bottom of the page, you may still get an extra page if the extended
list height would force it.
(3) Preview and render the report. You should no longer see any blank pages.

Exporting to PDF and TIFF

Hello All.
I have a report that uses a table. The table is designed to have a page
break after each new table. When I view the report in the designer preview,
it works fine by putting each new table on a new page, and generating the
document map. When I export from preview to PDF, TIFF and Excel, this works
fine too.
When I deploy it to my Report Server, accessing the report via the Report
Manager, it displays as above with no problems. When I export to Excel, this
is fine too. When I export to PDF or TIFF, it only shows the first page,
with one item in the document map.
Anyone have any ideas? If more info is needed, let me know and I will
provide if possible.
Thanks in advance.managed to fix it - just changed the page break to be at start of table and
it worked!!'
