External_access/unsafe - system call

Hi,
i need to make a system call from within the sqlserver (run an .exe file).
i do not want to define the db as trustworthy.
i've created a strong name key and related it to the code. i then created
asymetric key, granted access to the login and created the assembly but
failed.
what am i doing worng?Hello ????,
Here's folow I've solved this in the past:

external images disappear with interactive sort

I have created my report with embedded and external images. There are also
interactive sorting set up for all columns in my report. When I deploy the
report and look at it in the report manager, report appears good. However
when I try to change the sort directin of any any column using the
interactive sort icon then the new page does not have my external image. How
can I fix this so that I can see these images in my Report Manager?
Note: My system name does not have any underscore. But it has a hyphen. The
computer name in <urlroot> element of rsreportserver.config file has full
name in it. Also I tried to change the useSessionCookies entry to false in
ConfigurationInfo table of my Report server to false. But it did not help me.
So I reverted it back to true.This happened with me when I was using VS2005 beta but was fixed with
the real version. FYI|||Hi,
Thanks for posting at the newsgroup!
From your post, my understanding of this issue is: interactive sorting
works well in report manager, however, the sorting image is not working
now. If this is not correct, please feel free to let me know.
So currently I'd suggest we could check your SQL server 2005 version.
Please go to the localhost site and type the reporting service as below:
http://localhost/reportserver
Then at the page, the SQL server 2005 version will be listed. If you have
several instance at the reporting service, please use the url:
http://localhost/reportserver$<instancename>
Furthermore, if you could give us one detailed repro step(we could use the
Adventure works, pubs or northwind sample database) on this issue, that
will be very helpful for our troubleshooting. Thanks a lot!
Look forward to your reply!

It is my pleasure to be of any assistance.|||Hi all,
The version of Reporting services that I use is "Microsoft SQL Server
Reporting Services Version 9.00.1399.00". This is RTM version of SQL Server
2005.
Your understanding of my problem: "interactive sorting
works well in report manager, however, the sorting image is not working
now."
My Problem: "Interactive sorting works good in report manager and also the
sort image appears good. My report has a customer logo which is basically
created using project type. Thus it is an external image not the embedded
one. This external image which is added to report by me disappears when I
make use of the sorting using the sort icon in Report manager."
Thanks.|||Hi Ring,
Does the URL of your external image stored in database? Is it possible for
you to generate a reproduce sample based on AdventureWorks? Or it will be
appreciated if you could give me some screen shot.

I am not sure if you received my email. Thus I am answering you also in
newsgroup. My image which disappears with interactive sorting is not taken
from database. I initally add image to my report solution. When we try to put
image in our report from tool box, image wizard starts. I am choosing project
type in the image wizard. Then I choose the image which I previosly added to
my solution in the 3rd step of image wizard. Then while I deploy my report to
a folder in ReportServer, I also deploy my image to the same folder. As I do
not know how to add attachments in a web based newgroup viewer, I am not
attaching my screenshots.

external file fragmentation

I know that as the data file autogrows, we are subject to fragmentation
externally.
As an example, I created a data file starting at 1 GB and then have autogrow
set at 250 MB. . Say now its around 2 GB which means we may have 5 different
sets of contiguous allocations for this file. i.e one contiguous allocation
for the first time creation of 1 GB and then 4 250 MB allocations
Now say I detach this db and move the 2 GB file to another server.. Will it
copy this 2 GB file as one contiguous file or still have it broken down into
5 ? Trying to understand file level fragmentation.> Now say I detach this db and move the 2 GB file to another server.. Will

This depends. If you have on the target server enough contiguous space, the
new file should not be fragmented. Anyway, you can always check the
fragmentation and defragment files on disk with Disk Defragmenter.

External Access

Hello,

I want to access my database server from the internet. I've created a rule
on my router to redirect port 1433 to the desired machine, but still get a
Server does not exist, or access denied message. When I change the
(external) ip to the local IP address, connection succeeds. Is there
anything i need to change within SQL Server to allow external (internet)
access?http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...kb;en-us;287932

Extended Stored Procedures and VB

I have two functions in a .DLL created in VB6 I want to use.
I create two Extended Stored Procedures using:

sp_addextendedproc 'MyFunctionA', 'MyFunctions.dll'
sp_addextendedproc 'MyFunctionB', 'MyFunctions.dll'

When I run:
EXECUTE @.ReturnValue = MyFunctionA @.Paramate1

I get:
"Cannot find the function MyFunctionA in the library C:\Program Files\MyDLLs\MyFunctions.dll. Reason: 127(The specified procedure could not be found.)"

What am I missing?

Hi.

Do you get the same with CREATE ASSEMBLY and CREATE PROC?
CREATE ASSEMBLY ...
CREATE PROC ... AS EXTERNAL NAME ...

I guess I would not use MyFunctionA, not 'MyFunctionA', but I don't know if that matters.|||You cannot use DLLs created by VB as extended stored procedures. Hi,

I do not know Assembler (MASM, I Guess?), so I would not know. About an hour after you posted, someone answered my query. The answer is: You cannot do it in VB. You must use a lower level language like C, C++, or Delphi. If you want more info, you can view the answer at:

Hi,

Unfortunately I cannot implement the VB Code using UDFs or SPs. The VB Code I wrote is simply a wrapper around another DLL to simplify the interface.

Unfortunatley, I'm sort of stuck using the VB Function directly inside of the SP. I did some more digging and found C++ has an Extended Stored Procedure Wizard.

I know it sounds a bit clugy, but can I use the Wizard to create a C++ Program, which is a wrapper around the VB Program, which is a wrapper around the DLL?

Since I do not know C++, this might be the easier approach instead of rewriting VB in C++.

Books On-Line for SQL Server (Extended Stored Procedures >> Creating) gives some instructions, but it is confusing. The Example xp_hello may be helpful along with the other examples.

Thanks for your help!

|||The wizard will only create stubs that you have to implement. So you will have to call the VB program or use the DLL directly from C++. But this seems like lot of effort and features like extended stored procedures for example needs to be used with care. You can create a VB OLE automation object and then use it via the OLE automation SPs in SQL Server. Look for sp_OACreate. This may be the solution you are looking for. In any case, running external code from TSQL can have performance issues and it depends on the usage.|||

I have tried this solution and it seems to be very easy to implement: sp_OACreate, sp_OAMethod, and sp_OADestroy. It also seems to be much faster than you indicated.
Thank you very much for your help!!!

Extended Stored Procedure creation error

I've created an extended SP on my local machine (Win XP/ VS.Net 2003 / VC++)
.
It works fine when I tested on my local PC after I copied the created dll
file to binn directory and ran sp_addextendedproc.
I copied it to a Win 2000 Server/MS SQL's binn directory and
sp_addextendedproc completed successfully. However, it gives the following
error when I execute the stored procedure:
ODBC: Msg 0, Level 16, State 1
Cannot load the DLL "uxp_calc_sw_v1.dll", or one of the DLLs it references.
Reason: 126(The specified module could not be found.).
Is the dll rely on some other dlls? or should I use Visual C++ 6.0?I found the solution myself, I just copied the following two files to the
binn folder:
DLL Name: MSVCP70.dll
DLL Name: MSVCR70.dll
Or should I copy them to Winnt\system32?

There is some guidelines on this in MSDN Library. I had reason to
investigate the story about the Visual C DLL:s myself a while back. My
impressions is that the recommendation is that you should should distribute
the DLL:s with your code, and place in them together with your application.
Thus, you did put them into the right place.
If you want an answer from people who really understand this, you should
ask in a C++ newsgroup.

Extended properties created by Visual Studio on CLR UDF''s

When one deploys a CLR DLL that contains [SqlFunction]'s, Visual Studio creates three extended properties on the SQL function that is created: these are,

AutoDeployed, SqlAssemblyFile, SqlAssemblyFileLine.

What I haven't found anywhere on Help or MSDN online is what these extended properties mean.

Could someone enlighten me?

1. What is a description of the above properties?

2. What is the benefit of using them (clearly the function works without using them). Does it help debugging?

3. Does the developer need to manually keep for instance the SqlAssemblyFileLine in sync with changes in the .NET code?

Thanks a lot.

AFAIK, the above properties do not have any use at the moment. They have no impact on debugging.

expression in Visibility>Hidden field = No output to csv

Hi all,
I have a problem with a report I have created. It has around 52 columns and each column is shown or hidden based on a boolean parameter. Simple huh? I though so.

Each column has an expression similar to =IIF(Parameters!showfirstname.Value,False,True) for the Hidden field. This is not the hidden field for the 'cell' or 'header' but for the entire column.

The problem is, the report is correctly displayed as a pdf, tiff, excel file (possibly others), but all columns with an expression as the hidden value are not displayed in the xml or csv output regardless of the parameter value. This also applies if the expression is =IIF(True,False,True) or =IIF(1=1,False,True).

As soon as I change this field back to a simple 'True' or 'False' it displays correctly. I've tried playing around with setting the output options to values other than the default Auto setting to no avail.

There are numerous comments about this on newsgroups online going back to the first release of reporting services but none of them have solutions.

Regards

John Burns

John,

You can't conditionally hide and show data in data renderers (CSV, XML). This is by design. If you have an expression in the Hidden field and 'Auto' in DataOutput tab for text boxes in the column, your data will not be rendered into CSV or XML.

You can set DataElementOutput to Output for textboxes in the cells and in the header, and the coulmn will always be in the output file.

Thanks!

|||

You could in SQL 2000!

I've just upgraded to 2005 and exports to csv format no longer work whereas they did in SQL 2000. I've tracked the culpit down to the visibility statement. If there is an expression

e.g.

=IIf(1=1, false, true)

against the table then the data will render in all formats except csv\xml. This is a breaking change that has been introduced in 2005 so I would expect that microsoft would consider fixing it or producing a hot fix for affected systems. Note that I haven't applied any service packs but haven't seen anything related to this issue in the SP's.

Try this example report which queries sysobjects in the master database (change the data source first)

expression in Visibility>Hidden field = No output to csv

Hi all,
I have a problem with a report I have created.

Thanks!

|||

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>

Expression editor on Custom Properties on Custom Data Flow Component

Hi,

I've created a Custom Data Flow Component and added some Custom Properties.

I want the user to set the contents using an expression. I did some research and come up with the folowing:

Code Snippet

IDTSCustomProperty90 SourceTableProperty = ComponentMetaData.CustomPropertyCollection.New();
SourceTableProperty.ExpressionType = DTSCustomPropertyExpressionType.CPET_NOTIFY;
SourceTableProperty.Name = "SourceTable";

But it doesn't work, if I enter @.[System:Stick out tongueackageName] in the field. It comes out "@.[System:Stick out tongueackageName]" instead of the actual package name.

I'm also unable to find how I can tell the designer to show the Expression editor. I would like to see the elipses (...) next to my field.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you

The expression for a component's property is held at the task level. If a property is marked as CPET_NOTIFY, it notifies the task (the data flow which parent's the component), which tells it to generate a new property on which can be set an expression. So to see the expression in the designer look at the properties grid for the data flow task, not the component.

|||Hello Darren,

Thank you for the quick response. But the expression editor doesn't show in the propertiesgrid either.

Could I be missing anything?|||

Are you looking at the properties grid of the DATA FLOW component or at your custom data flow component? Also, did you set the flag darren mentioned above so that the data flow component will know to include this property in it's properties expression list?

|||Ah, yes, I see it now. But it is not what I'm looking for.

Is there now way to set the expresison builder on the component itself? When the expression builder is used on the parent task, I cannot access the incomming rows.

Thank you kindly|||

Why do you think your component will have features over and above that available to Microsoft themselves?

Property expressions are ONLY available at the task level, because they are provided in the task framework.

You have created a property expression, so your mention of incoming rows does not make sense. Property expressions are just that, for the property, but not the value itself, the result will override the value. Just look how they work in the rest of SSIS.

A property that holds a text string that could be parsed as an expression is something different and maybe what you want? Perhaps the Derived Column transform may be easier?

Expose RS to Internet?

Hello I have just created some reports and I want to expose them to the
internet without windows authentication. I mean that every user outside can
see my reports without being part of the domain.
Thanks for your help.From everything that I have read, I don't think that this is possible. You
need to authenticate against RS using Windows Authentication or some other
type of Forms Authentication (which is only supported in Enterprise Edition).
If you figure out a way, please do share, but I don't think that it is
possible.
I have the same issue, but have SQL Server Standard Edition and can't figure
out away to make this happen.

Exporting/downloading a .RDL

I had a close call when my local PC's drive crashed and I was afraid I'd
lost the latest copies of the reports I'd created. Turns out not to be the
case (whew!) but it left me with a question.
I'd looked around the SQL server for the .rdl files and didn't find them.
Does deploying a report to the report server mean that the .rdl is copied to
the server and then configured in the SQL database appropriately? Is so,
where is the .rdl file copied since, in the case I'd lost my local copy, I
would want to copy it from the server back onto my local machine for further
development.
If not, is there some recovery tool somewhere by some nifty programmer that
would reconstruct the report based on what SQL Server has in it's
ReportServer database?
Thanks.
JonOpen Report Manager (http://localhost/reports), select your report and
click the 'Properties' tab. You'll see a section on the page called
"Report Definition". Click the Edit link and you'll have the RDL.
Andy Potter|||That's really easy and exactly what I was looking for.
Thanks, Andy.
Jon|||In addition to the previous reply, you can use Reporting Services Scripter
to dump out all your reports

Exporting XML file format issue

Hello
I am trying to generate an XML file from SQL Server which gets pushed out to
a third party app using DTS. So Far I have created a sproc like so.
CREATE PROC querystrCR
AS
SELECT 1 as Tag,
NULL as Parent,
'<![CDATA[' + CR_NAME + ']]>' as [CR!1!CR_NAME!XML],
'<![CDATA[' + CR_SRC + ']]>' as [CR!1!CR_SCR!XML],
'<![CDATA[' + CR_FLAGS + ']]>' as [CR!1!CR_FLAGS!XML],
'<![CDATA[' + CR_STIME + ']]>' as [CR!1!CR_STIME!XML],
'<![CDATA[' + CR_FTIME + ']]>' as [CR!1!CR_FTIME!XML],
'<![CDATA[' + PRIO + ']]>' as [CR!1!PRIO!XML],
'<![CDATA[' + MTIME + ']]>' as [CR!1!MTIME!XML]
FROM CR
FOR XML EXPLICIT
It needs the CDATA fields as they contain several odd characters. Then I
export the file as part of a DTS package like so;
EXEC sp_makewebtask
@.outputfile = 'e:\CDR\Routing\cuscall-callroute.xml',
@.query = 'EXEC querystrCR',
@.templatefile = 'e:\CDR\Routing\cuscallCR.tpl'
The template file looks like
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>
<DB>
<%begindetail%>
<%insert_data_here%>
<%enddetail%>
</DB>
The problem is with the format of the output file. SQL Server spits it out
in rows which don't correspond to the tags e.g. a line end like
</CR_STIME><CR_FTIME><![CDATA[ "-1/-1/-1/-1/-1/-1/-1/-1" ]]></CR_FT
Obviously this means the third party app. will not parse it and a web
browser will not open the file e.g. Firefox reports "XML Parsing Error: not
well-formed". I need the output in the exported file to look
<CPB>
<CR_NAME><![CDATA[ "CTE-CLI Active" ]]></CR_NAME>
<CR_SRC><![CDATA[ "RES-062728464" ]]></CR_SRC>
<CR_FLAGS><![CDATA[ "0" ]]></CR_FLAGS>
<CR_STIME><![CDATA[ "-1/-1/-1/-1/-1/-1/-1/-1" ]]></CR_STIME>
<CR_FTIME><![CDATA[ "-1/-1/-1/-1/-1/-1/-1/-1" ]]></CR_FTIME>
<PRIO><![CDATA[ "1" ]]></PRIO>
<MTIME><![CDATA[ "999999999" ]]></MTIME>
</CPB>
Any Help would be appreciated.
Cheers

achieve otherwise. In particular it does not help with invalid characters
(what are your odd characters?). So you may not need to use it.
3. FOR XML results per default return fragments. In order to export it as a
document, add the root node (there are a couple of ways depending on the API
used).
4. If you want to expose the XML, you should use either the respective
stream-based APIs (ADO/OLEDB CommandStream, the SQLXML classes in ADO.net)
or use the SQLXML HTTP ISAPI. Otherwise (e.g. ODBC), you may get chunked XML
in approx 4kBytes blocks that you need to merge yourself.

Exporting XML file format issue

Hello
I am trying to generate an XML file from SQL Server which gets pushed out to
a third party app using DTS. So Far I have created a sproc like so.
CREATE PROC querystrCR
AS
SELECT 1 as Tag,
NULL as Parent,
'<![CDATA[' + CR_NAME + ']]>' as [CR!1!CR_NAME!XML],
'<![CDATA[' + CR_SRC + ']]>' as [CR!1!CR_SCR!XML],
'<![CDATA[' + CR_FLAGS + ']]>' as [CR!1!CR_FLAGS!XML],
'<![CDATA[' + CR_STIME + ']]>' as [CR!1!CR_STIME!XML],
'<![CDATA[' + CR_FTIME + ']]>' as [CR!1!CR_FTIME!XML],
'<![CDATA[' + PRIO + ']]>' as [CR!1!PRIO!XML],
'<![CDATA[' + MTIME + ']]>' as [CR!1!MTIME!XML]
FROM CR
FOR XML EXPLICIT
It needs the CDATA fields as they contain several odd characters. Then I
export the file as part of a DTS package like so;
EXEC sp_makewebtask
@.outputfile = 'e:\CDR\Routing\cuscall-callroute.xml',
@.query = 'EXEC querystrCR',
@.templatefile = 'e:\CDR\Routing\cuscallCR.tpl'
The template file looks like
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>
<DB>
<%begindetail%>
<%insert_data_here%>
<%enddetail%>
</DB>
The problem is with the format of the output file. SQL Server spits it out
in rows which don't correspond to the tags e.g. a line end like
</CR_STIME><CR_FTIME><![CDATA[ "-1/-1/-1/-1/-1/-1/-1/-1" ]]></CR_FT
Obviously this means the third party app. will not parse it and a web
browser will not open the file e.g. Firefox reports "XML Parsing Error: not
well-formed". I need the output in the exported file to look
<CPB>
<CR_NAME><![CDATA[ "CTE-CLI Active" ]]></CR_NAME>
<CR_SRC><![CDATA[ "RES-062728464" ]]></CR_SRC>
<CR_FLAGS><![CDATA[ "0" ]]></CR_FLAGS>
<CR_STIME><![CDATA[ "-1/-1/-1/-1/-1/-1/-1/-1" ]]></CR_STIME>
<CR_FTIME><![CDATA[ "-1/-1/-1/-1/-1/-1/-1/-1" ]]></CR_FTIME>
<PRIO><![CDATA[ "1" ]]></PRIO>
<MTIME><![CDATA[ "999999999" ]]></MTIME>
</CPB>
Any Help would be appreciated.
Cheers

Exporting To PDF With Chinese/Jap Characters

Hi all!I have created a report that may display Chinese, Korean and Japanese characters. Everything is fine on the report itself when rendered in the browser, all the characters are showing as it should be, but when I try to export it to pdf, all these characters turned into question marks ??.

I've tried installing Adobe Asian pack, but still I can't make these character shows up.Can anyone shed light on this? I'm doing a local report only BTW. Would there be any effect if I'll do it as a server report?

Anything that could get me started would be greatly appreciated.Thanks in advance.

I've had these kind of issues to when I used what is supposed to be a unicode font, Arial. After switching to a different unicode font, MS Gothic, everything printed correctly. Try that.

Eric

|||:O that's weird, but I'll try it tomorrow in the office|||

I've tried MS Gothic, the chinese character showed correctly but for Jap, Korean and Thai it didn't :( So tried other fonts and the closest that can show Chinese, Jap & Korean is the font Batang, though it cannot display Thai :(

I've googled endlessly post on different forums but still got any clear answer as to if this is a limitation on SSRS or what.

|||

Sorry I can't help you any more. I'm still pretty new to unicode fonts.

Eri

|||

I'm having the same exact issue. I tried using Batang as a font but it still will not show up properly in pdf. have you found a fix for this?

|||

No prob Eric. Actually you already helped me when you said try using other fonts. It will be my temporary fix for the mean time.

@.user

I dunno if the Asian Language pack from adobe would help. I have installed it before I tried changing the font style on the report.
